In South Wales there is an extraordinary tradition of Rockabilly; that early fusion of rock n roll, country and blues that arguably began in Sam Phillip’s Sun studios in Memphis with Elvis, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis
I played with a great rockabilly outfit – Memphis Bend – for a few years. It was this band that had backed Perkins on his UK tours, and gave me a first hand feel of how one of my early heroes played.
Whilst many over the years tried to emulate the sound, few ever achieved it. But in Cardiff, Penarth and surrounding towns the genre has persisted. And there is no finer exponent of this than my “old” dear friend, the double bass exponent Dave “Bat” Goddard and his current band featuring Lewis Clayton on guitar and vocals – a young Carl Perkins if ever there was one.
